目前,香港正面對氣候變化的難關。2007年,香港經歷了有紀錄以來,最熱的第二年。 |

Right now, we are all facing the challenge of climate change. 2007 was the second hottest year since record keeping began. Scientists discovered that there are several greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, and the gas that causes the most warming is carbon dioxide, also called CO2. In Hong Kong, the population rose by 6.8% between 1997 and 2007, while the per capita electricity consumption rose by 18.6%! Actually, power plants emit huge amounts of CO2 during the process of generating electricity. In 2007, household electricity consumption was about 10.1 billion kWh or HK$ 10.1 billion, equal to the emission of 7,575,000 tonnes of CO2, i.e. the size of 170,000 Olympic swimming pools or 3,850,000 double-decker buses. In recent years, lights out campaigns have been started around the world indicating the resolution of governments, corporations, and the public to address the issue. We need to join hands to tackle climate change through energy conservation together, for the benefit of everyone today and the generation of tomorrow. |
